Relief From Traffic Jams: Tribune Chowk Flyover Work Set To Begin

How Much Will It Cost, And When Will It Be Completed? Find Out Here

The long-awaited flyover project aimed at providing relief from traffic congestion at Tribune Chowk is now on the verge of commencement. Construction work is scheduled to begin in the first week of May. The total estimated cost of this project is approximately ₹200 crore, with a target set for its completion within two years.

According to the UT Engineering Department, a total of 12 companies participated in the tender process issued for the flyover’s construction, out of which 8 companies successfully met the technical criteria. Subsequently, the financial bids were opened, wherein Singha Constructions Ltd. submitted the lowest bid of ₹147.98 crore. This figure is significantly lower than the project’s estimated cost of ₹214.65 crore, offering the administration hope for substantial cost savings.

Chief Engineer C.B. Ojha stated that the UT Engineering Department has prepared a proposal regarding the lowest-bidding company and has forwarded it to the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for approval. Construction work will commence immediately upon receiving the green signal from the Ministry.

Situated on National Highway-5, Tribune Chowk serves as the city’s primary traffic hub, witnessing an average daily traffic volume of 200,000 vehicles. This junction connects Panchkula, Mohali, and Chandigarh, resulting in heavy traffic pressure throughout the day.

The congestion becomes particularly severe during peak hours from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Once the flyover is constructed, a signal free corridor will be established at this location, facilitating smoother vehicular movement and providing much-needed relief to commuters who have long endured these traffic jams.

The Flyover Will Be 1.45 Km Long

Under this project, a flyover approximately 1.45 kilometers in length and an underpass spanning about 519 meters will be constructed. Additionally, wider roads, service lanes, and modern traffic management facilities will be developed to ensure a more streamlined traffic flow across the entire region.

This flyover will commence from the roundabout near the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector-32, pass through Tribune Chowk, and extend up to the railway overbridge leading towards Hallo Majra.

Work Stalled For Eight Years Due To Technical And Legal Hurdles

This project had received approval back in 2018; however, work could not commence due to various technical and legal impediments. Subsequently, the tendering process was re-initiated with a revised cost estimate. Now, all procedural formalities have been largely completed, and construction work is set to begin as soon as final approval is received.

The administration anticipates that this flyover will not only significantly alleviate the problem of traffic congestion but also render the city’s traffic management system more modern and organized.
