A major administrative reshuffle has taken place within the Central Government following widespread public outrage and student protests across the country regarding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak issue. Just a day after Dharmendra Pradhan stepped down, senior BJP leader and five-time MP from Dharwad, Pralhad Joshi, formally assumed office as the new Union Education Minister on Sunday. Upon taking charge of the Ministry of Education, Joshi made it clear that ensuring transparency in competitive examinations and restoring the confidence of students would be his top priority.
Priorities Set Immediately Upon Assuming Office
After assuming office at the Ministry of Education’s headquarters in Shastri Bhawan, Pralhad Joshi held a high-level review meeting with senior officials. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, he said, “The future of the country lies in the hands of our youth and students. The integrity of the examination system will not be compromised at any cost. Any flaws or irregularities that have come to light regarding the NEET issue will be investigated impartially, and the strictest possible action will be taken against those found guilty.”
Assuring students and parents, he stated that the government would review the functioning of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and implement stringent structural reforms to prevent such incidents in the future.
Extensive Administrative And Organizational Experience
Pralhad Joshi is counted among the most experienced and trusted leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Having won the Dharwad parliamentary seat in Karnataka five consecutive times, Joshi has successfully handled responsibilities across various ministries during the tenures of the Modi government.
2019 to 2024 : He served as the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines. During this period, he played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth conduct of legislative business in both Houses of Parliament. * 2024 Tenure: Following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he was entrusted with the portfolios of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and New and Renewable Energy.
Known for his organizational skills and crisis management capabilities throughout his long political career, Joshi is expected to succeed in resolving the ongoing impasse in the education sector.
New Responsibility And Future Challenges
The most significant challenges currently facing the new Education Minister are bringing transparency to the country’s examination system and accelerating the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020). Addressing the discontent among lakhs of students sparked by the NEET paper leak and ensuring that upcoming competitive examinations are conducted without controversy will be a litmus test for him.
Academics and student organizations believe that Pralhad Joshi’s firm administrative approach could prove instrumental in bringing about necessary reforms to the ministry’s administrative structure and restoring the trust lost among students.
