Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has made a big revelation. According to Meta, it has removed over 7 lakh accounts suspected of being linked to children and teenagers under the age of 16 in Australia.
According to Meta’s official statement, in the six months from December to June, just before the Australian social media ban came into effect, the company deactivated 4 lakh 62 thousand suspicious Instagram accounts and 2 lakh 94 thousand suspicious Facebook accounts. In the period up to January, this number had reached 3 lakh 31 thousand on Instagram and 1 lakh 73 thousand on Facebook. The company clarified that these accounts belonged to users who were suspected of being under the age of 16.
Let us tell you that this step by Meta has been taken after the historic law, which was passed by the Australian government due to serious concerns about the negative effects of social media on the physical and mental health of children. This law came into effect across the country from December 10. Under this, children under the age of 16 are prohibited from having accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and other major platforms.
Meta has said that it is using A.I. to identify accounts run by children under the age of 16. For this, the company is not limited to the information provided by users. Its systems also track profiles and user activity.
