Census Process Begins In Chandigarh; Self-Enumeration Starts April 16

Residents Can Fill Out Full Details From Home

The census process in the city is set to formally commence. According to the administration, a “Self-Enumeration” facility will be available to citizens starting April 16, allowing residents to personally record their demographic information from the comfort of their homes.

Subsequently, starting May 1, census enumerators will conduct door-to-door visits to collect information and record data for those households that have not yet filled out their details themselves. The census will be completed in two phases. The first phase will begin in May with House Listing and the Housing Census.

The second phase, comprising the actual Population Enumeration, will be conducted starting in February 2027. The administration organized comprehensive training programs for officials and staff between February and April.

Following these training sessions which ran from February 20 to April 29 the creation of House Listing Blocks will be finalized. This measure aims to ensure 100% coverage of every area and household. The administration has appealed to citizens to cooperate in this vital process by providing accurate and precise information, thereby enabling the effective implementation of future development plans.

It is worth noting that the last census was conducted in 2011; although the next census was originally scheduled for 2021, it was postponed and is now being conducted in 2026. This time, the census will run from May 1 to May 30. During this period, a complete list of every house and building will be compiled.

A key feature of this census in Chandigarh is that senior officials will lead the exercise for each specific ward, ensuring that the entire process is executed correctly and in a systematic manner.
