BJP’s Big Move Ahead of Punjab Elections

The Punjab BJP has found a new state president. The party high command has entrusted the leadership of the state BJP to Kewal Singh Dhillon a former MLA from Barnala and a veteran leader.
With the announcement of his name, discussions regarding new political equations within the Punjab BJP have intensified. The party leadership has taken this decision at a time when the organization faces the challenge of revitalizing its structure in Punjab and strengthening its foothold in rural areas.
Kewal Singh Dhillon hails from Talewal village in Barnala. He was born on May 16, 1950. He is counted among Punjab’s prominent industrialists and influential political leaders. He heads the Dhillon Group and has long played an active role in both business and politics. He completed his early education in Barnala.
Kewal Singh Dhillon Is A Class 12 Pass-Out
He has completed his Class 12 education and pursued his B.A. Part-I studies at S.D. College, Barnala, during the 1969–70 academic session. His father’s name is Sajan Singh Dhillon, while his wife’s name is Manjit Kaur. His two sons Kanwarinder Singh Dhillon and Karaninder Singh Dhillon currently manage the family business and real estate operations.
Dhillon has been active in Punjab politics for nearly two decades. He was elected as an MLA from Barnala on a Congress ticket in both the 2007 and 2012 assembly elections. In the 2012 assembly polls, he secured a victory by a significant margin.
He also served as the Senior Vice President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and was considered a prominent face of the Congress party in the Malwa region. However, he faced defeat in the 2017 assembly elections and the 2019 Sangrur Lok Sabha elections.
Left Congress In June 2022
Subsequently, in June 2022, he left the Congress party and joined the BJP. The BJP also fielded him as its candidate in the Sangrur Lok Sabha by election. Until recently, he was counted among the senior leaders of the Punjab BJP’s Core Committee. Political observers believe that the BJP has placed its bet on Kewal Singh Dhillon with the aim of strengthening the party organization in the Malwa region and expanding its influence among the farming and business communities.
Prior to this, Ashwani Sharma had been serving as the Acting President of the Punjab BJP. Meanwhile, former state president Sunil Jakhar had also left the Congress party to join the BJP. Under Jakhar’s leadership, the BJP had endeavored to expand its base in Punjab.
Now, by appointing Kewal Singh Dhillon as the State President, the party has sent a clear signal that it intends to move forward in Punjab by prioritizing new faces and maintaining regional balance. The BJP leadership is hopeful that the party will benefit in the upcoming elections from Kewal Singh Dhillon’s experience, business background, and influence within the Malwa region.
Former Punjab BJP State President Sunil Jakhar took to the social media platform ‘X’ to write that serving as the President of the Punjab BJP was a matter of great pride and immense responsibility for him. He stated that the trust reposed in him by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the continuous guidance received from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, remained a source of strength throughout his entire tenure.
Whose Teachings Did Jakhar Mention?
Jakhar also made mention of the organizational insights he gained from the BJP’s National General Secretary (Organization), B.L. Santhosh. Furthermore, he expressed his gratitude to former National President J.P. Nadda and current National President Nitin Naveen for their support and encouragement. He affirmed that the true strength of the Punjab BJP lies in its workers, leaders, and supporters across the state, whose loyalty and cooperation made his tenure a memorable one.
Extending his best wishes to the new State President, Kewal Singh Dhillon, the former president remarked that this responsibility is now being entrusted to him, and he has full confidence that the organization will grow even stronger under Dhillon’s leadership. He pledged to continue offering every possible assistance in the service of Punjab and in furthering the growth of the organization.
In his message, Sunil Jakhar also clarified that his bond with Punjab, its people, and the party organization transcends any official position. He asserted that this deep-rooted connection would continue to endure with the same level of dedication and commitment in the future. Notably, the BJP recently appointed Kewal Singh Dhillon a former MLA from Barnala as the new State President of the Punjab BJP. Dhillon had joined the BJP after leaving the Congress party. Similarly, Sunil Jakhar had also switched from the Congress to the BJP, and the party had entrusted him with the leadership of the Punjab BJP.
During his tenure, Ashwani Sharma remained active in the role of Working President. Now, amidst these organizational changes, the BJP is working on a strategy to strengthen its political base in Punjab through new leadership.
