Students With Equal Marks To Now Receive Equal Honor; CM Mann Reforms Ranking Rules

A major change has been introduced in Punjab regarding the results of board examinations and the system for ranking toppers. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced that, henceforth, students securing identical marks will no longer be assigned different ranks based on their dates of birth. All such students will now be accorded the same rank and equal honor.

The Chief Minister took this decision during a felicitation ceremony held to honor students who demonstrated outstanding performance in the board examinations. During the event, meritorious students from the 10th and 12th grades were honored. The Chief Minister interacted directly with the students and congratulated them on their achievements. During these interactions, the students shared their experiences and engaged in discussions with the Chief Minister on various topics related to the education system.

Rankings Used To Change Based On Date Of Birth

During the program, a student from Amritsar raised the issue of the existing ranking system before the Chief Minister. The student pointed out that in her district, three students had secured identical marks, yet they were ranked first, second, and third, respectively, solely on the basis of their dates of birth. Consequently, only the student declared as the “first rank holder” received the opportunity to be felicitated by the Chief Minister, while the other two students despite having secured the exact same marks were deprived of this honor.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann listened to the student’s concerns with great seriousness and immediately issued necessary directives to the officials of the Education Department. He asserted that when students have secured identical marks, it is unjust to draw any distinction between them. He clarified that, going forward, all students securing the same marks will be jointly awarded the same rank, and there will be absolutely no discrimination in terms of the honors bestowed upon them.

Hard Work To Receive Full Recognition

The Chief Minister stated that the Punjab government accords the highest priority to education, and the hard work put in by students deserves to be fully recognized and respected. He emphasized that education is not merely confined to securing marks; rather, it is intrinsically linked to building a student’s self-confidence and shaping their future. Therefore, no student should be held back or disadvantaged solely on technical grounds.

This decision by the Chief Minister was warmly welcomed by the students, parents, and teachers present at the event. Stakeholders within the education sector believe that this decision will prove to be a significant step toward establishing a more equitable and transparent system. This will ensure that students securing equal marks in the future receive equal respect and opportunities, and that no sense of inequality arises among them.
