Govt. Takes Major Decision Amid Energy Crisis: Kerosene Regulations Relaxed
Paving The Way For Increased Supply

Amid mounting pressure on LPG supplies due to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and rising tensions in West Asia, the government has taken a significant step. The government has relaxed petroleum regulations to expedite the supply of kerosene (also known as Mitti Ka Tel). The objective is to ensure that people do not face difficulties regarding cooking and lighting needs, and that alternative fuel can be made available to them immediately.
The government stated that regulations related to petroleum safety and licensing have been simplified to facilitate the rapid distribution of kerosene. This measure has been implemented across 21 states and Union Territories. Under this initiative, petrol pumps have also been granted permission to store and sell kerosene. This decision will remain in force on a temporary basis for a period of 60 days.
Will Kerosene Be Available at Petrol Pumps?
The government has authorized public sector petrol pumps such as those operated by Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum to sell kerosene. Each designated petrol pump will be permitted to stock up to 5,000 liters of kerosene. Two pumps in every district may be selected for this purpose to ensure that supplies reach the public swiftly.
In Which States Will This Decision Apply?
This arrangement has been implemented across 21 states and Union Territories, including Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat. Particular attention has been focused on areas that had previously been declared “kerosene-free.” Kerosene supplies are now being resumed in these areas based on current requirements.

Has Additional Kerosene Been Allocated?
In addition to regular supplies, the government has allocated an additional 48,000 kiloliters of kerosene to the states. This additional allocation will help meet immediate requirements. Additionally, kerosene will be distributed through ration shops, with priority given to rural areas.
Is Work Also Underway Regarding Other Fuels?
To alleviate the pressure on LPG, the government has also bolstered alternative options such as coal and kerosene. The Ministry of Coal has issued directives to the states to supply increased quantities of coal. Furthermore, emphasis is being placed on expanding PNG connections to ensure that people have access to a sustainable solution.
Will This Not Compromise Safety?
The government has stated that, despite the relaxation of regulations, there will be no compromise on safety. Strict vigilance will be maintained to prevent the misuse of kerosene. The government asserts that this measure is intended solely to address the current crisis and will be reviewed once conditions return to normalcy.
