Even Today, People In Society Are Judged By Their Surnames: Mahwash

Actress Mahwash is all set for the release of her upcoming web series, *Satrangi: Badle Ka Khel*. The actress states that the series addresses serious issues such as the North Indian folk art form ‘Launda Naach’ and caste-based discrimination. In a conversation the actress revealed that she immediately agreed to the project the moment she heard the script. She said, “When I heard the story, I felt that it wasn’t merely a source of entertainment, but also a medium to convey a social message.
Having grown up in Uttar Pradesh, I had witnessed and heard about such realities in my own surroundings. Becoming a part of that world was a deeply meaningful opportunity for me. My character, too, possesses multiple emotional layers, and for an actor, such complexity is always thrilling.” The series’ trailer makes it evident that the narrative is not solely about revenge, but also a battle for identity and self-respect. The actress pointed out that, even today, many people in society are judged based on their surnames or titles. Caste-based violence remains a visible reality in our surroundings.
“Through this series, we simply wanted to highlight the hardships people are forced to endure due to factors entirely beyond their control. It is, undoubtedly, a battle for identity and justice, and I hope that, ultimately, society will win this fight.” In the series, Mahwash portrays a rural girl hailing from an influential and powerful family a ‘strongman’ clan who rises up to oppose the atrocities committed by her own family as well as the rigid caste system. Speaking about her rural character, the actress noted that portraying it was not difficult for her.
She remarked, “To be honest, I didn’t find it difficult at all, because I have lived both kinds of lives. While *Pyaar Paisa Profit* showcased my ‘Mumbai’ side, *Satrangi* reflects my roots in Aligarh.” The actress further shared that her journey to reach this point involved giving countless auditions and enduring numerous rejections. He said, “Reaching this stage was, in itself, a challenge, because you have to face countless auditions and rejections before you get an opportunity. You learn from rejection and gradually come to understand your craft. Acting for digital content and portraying emotionally profound characters are not two different worlds. If you truly know how to act, this transition happens quite naturally.”
