Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini accused opposition parties of hindering the progress of women’s political empowerment, claiming that their actions in Parliament prevented the passage of key legislation aimed at ensuring reservation for women.
Addressing a press conference in Rohtak, Saini stated that the opposition’s stance against the proposed implementation measures linked to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan’ framework reflects a lack of commitment toward women’s rights. He alleged that parties such as the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and DMK are prioritizing political interests over meaningful reforms.
The Chief Minister remarked that the developments that unfolded in Parliament on April 16 and 17 deprived women of the opportunity to secure greater representation in the Lok Sabha. He termed the situation a setback for democratic values, noting that it has impacted the aspirations of a significant section of the population.
Saini also criticized the Congress, alleging that while it has historically raised the issue of women’s reservation, it failed to take concrete steps to implement it. In contrast, he credited the Narendra Modi-led central leadership for making efforts to expedite the process.
He clarified that three key bills the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Delimitation Bill, and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill were introduced to enable the implementation of 33 percent reservation for women without having to wait for the lengthy census and delimitation exercises. According to him, the objective was to ensure that women could avail the benefits of this reservation by the 2029 general elections.
The Chief Minister further accused opposition parties of spreading misinformation regarding the delimitation process, particularly concerning its impact on the states. He clarified that the proposed model aims for an equitable increase in Lok Sabha seats across all states, while maintaining proportional representation. Highlighting demographic shifts, Saini noted that the country’s population has grown remarkably since the 1970s, making the expansion of parliamentary seats essential to ensure equitable representation. He maintained that the proposed increase would benefit all regions equally.
In conclusion, Saini asserted that women’s participation in governance is a matter of right, not of concession, and called for collective efforts to strengthen their role within the political system.
