Chinese Company BYD Unveils Remarkable 3-In-1 SUV

After pursuing an SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) strategy in Brazil, the Chinese company BYD has introduced its first locally manufactured vehicle for the region. Even more impressive is the vehicle’s powertrain, which is designed to operate on petrol, ethanol, and pure electric power. It has been developed specifically for the Brazilian market.

Super Hybrid Flex-Fuel

This model is known as the BYD Song Pro Super Hybrid Flex-Fuel (or Song Pro DM-i Flex). This new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) flex-fuel model will be manufactured at BYD’s Camaçari plant, which is projected to produce 180,000 vehicles this year part of BYD’s overall target of selling 200,000 vehicles in Brazil in 2024.

Petrol, Ethanol, And Electric

As the name suggests, the new BYD Song Pro Super-Hybrid Flex-Fuel is based on the Song Pro and features a unique powertrain capable of running on petrol, ethanol, or pure electric power. This PHEV powertrain offers a pure electric range of up to 120 km in the high-spec GS variants. The engine has been engineered to run on flex-fuel, a technology recently adopted in Brazil.

Consequently, the powertrain’s ability to run on both petrol and ethanol makes it particularly well-suited for the Brazilian market. Furthermore, this presents an opportunity for BYD to expand into other markets such as India that are also transitioning to ethanol flex-fuel technology.

Plans For India

Alexandre Baldy, the brand’s Senior Vice President, has confirmed that while the BYD Song Pro DM-i Flex was created specifically for Brazil, it could eventually target other markets, including India. Currently, BYD India offers only pure electric vehicles to avail the benefit of lower taxes.
