1,790 Driving Licenses Revoked In Indiana, USA; Crackdown Follows Accidents

The crackdown against immigrant drivers in the United States is steadily intensifying. Taking a significant step, the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state of Indiana has revoked 1,790 non-permanent commercial driving licenses. This order came into effect on April 1st, directly impacting the livelihoods of thousands of immigrant drivers particularly those belonging to the Punjabi community.

According to reports, this action was taken not merely for administrative reasons, but in the wake of several serious road accidents that occurred recently. In February 2026, an accident involving Sukhdeep Singh resulted in the death of an American citizen, after which demands to tighten regulations gained momentum. Prior to this, approximately 17,000 licenses had also been revoked in California due to the expiration of their validity periods.

Although drivers working under certain visa categories have been exempted from this action, a large number of immigrant drivers many of whom have been working in the trucking sector for a long time have been adversely affected. United Sikhs, an organization active in the U.S., has launched a nationwide assistance service to support the affected drivers.

Opposition In Punjab To The Indiana Government’s Decision

The decision has also elicited a political response. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, the former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab, has publicly and strongly criticized this move by the U.S. authorities. He stated that thousands of Punjabi youths support their families by working as truck drivers, and this decision has placed their livelihoods in jeopardy. He has urged the Central Government to take up this matter at a diplomatic level.

Meanwhile, other Sikh organizations including the Sikh Coalition have also voiced their opposition to this decision. These organizations argue that many drivers were not afforded a fair opportunity to present their case, and that this abrupt decision has created an atmosphere of anxiety throughout the entire community.

Licensing Process Becomes Even Stricter

Under the new regulations, the process for non-citizen drivers to obtain a license has been made even more stringent. Verification of legal status has been made mandatory, and standards such as language proficiency have also been tightened. Experts believe that these decisions could lead to a shortage of qualified drivers, which, in turn, could impact the transportation system and supply chains.
