Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that if the BJP forms the government in Punjab following the 2027 assembly elections, a law will be enacted to ban religious conversions in the state. Addressing a Badlav’ (Change) rally held here, Shah raised the issue of religious conversions in Punjab, asserting that the entire state is suffering from it.
He remarked that the whole of Punjab is grappling with the problem of religious conversions. “I appeal to all my Hindu and Sikh brothers and sisters: give the BJP a mandate to form the government just once, and we will introduce a bill to ban religious conversions.”
The senior BJP leader questioned whether the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were unaware of this situation. He accused both parties of encouraging religious conversions for the sake of vote-bank politics. Shah noted that Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Guru of the Sikhs, had sacrificed his life to prevent religious conversions.
He declared, “Standing on this very soil today, I wish to state that were it not for Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, not a single Hindu would remain in India today.” The Union Home Minister emphasized that it is the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur that has sustained this nation. He added, “From Guru Nanak Dev to Guru Gobind Singh, I pay my humble tributes to all the Gurus.”
Earlier this month, while speaking at an event in Mumbai, Shah had addressed the issue of religious conversions in Punjab and appealed to the state’s AAP government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to put an end to the practice of inducing conversions through ‘inducements.’
Shah was speaking at the ‘Hind-di-Chadar’ commemorative event, held in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
