‘Peddi’s’ Story Inspired Me – Ram Charan

Ram Charan is currently making headlines for his upcoming film, ‘Peddi’. In the film, he portrays a character whose story revolves around village life, self-respect, struggle, and identity. Here are excerpts from a conversation with him…
What Was The Main Reason For Choosing ‘Peddi’?
It is a film made with honesty and dedication. It is a story rooted in the soil of India. It tells the tale of people who live for their identity and self-respect. Even today, there are many villages in the country that are not properly documented or recognized. The people living there have access to only limited basic amenities. ‘Peddi’ is the story of one such young man who, while searching for his own identity, strives to bring recognition to his entire village and community.
How Much Preparation Did This Require?
The character was challenging on both physical and mental levels. In North India specifically UP, Haryana, and Bihar wrestling is not just a sport; it is an emotion. Before me, Salman Khan showcased wrestling on the big screen in ‘Sultan’, and Aamir Khan did so in ‘Dangal’. I really like Salman. The success of his films gave me the confidence that stories rooted in the Indian soil resonate deeply with audiences. The shoot spanned nearly 200 days, requiring rigorous training and constant physical exertion.
You Have Always Taken Risks. Aren’t You Afraid Of Injuries?
Everyone feels fear, but I prefer performing my own stunts. Technology has improved significantly today, so the risk factor has decreased. I feel that audiences can distinguish between real action sequences and those performed by a body double. When you do it yourself, it creates a unique connection with the audience. My father still performs his own stunts. I try to stop him, but there is a distinct appeal to it. ‘Peddi’ has deeply inspired me from within.
Your Father, Chiranjeevi, Remarked That Films Like This Are Made Only Once In A Decade. How Did It Feel To Hear That?
When an artist of such stature who is also your father says something like that, the sense of responsibility grows. It feels as though the weight on my shoulders has increased even more. I worked hard on this film for about 13-14 months. For several months, I followed a strictly vegetarian diet.
