New Integrated Bus Terminus To Be Built In Manimajra
Buses For Five States; Cost Estimated At ₹80 Crore
Preparations are underway to construct a new transport hub in Manimajra that will cater not only to local buses but also to buses connecting to five other states. The Municipal Corporation is drafting a proposal to build an integrated bus terminus on a six-acre plot near Housing Board Chowk at an estimated cost of ₹80 to ₹100 crore.
The plan involves operating buses to Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from this location, alongside local bus services for the Manimajra-Panchkula region. The terminus will have a daily capacity of 15,000 passengers and accommodate 20 to 25 buses simultaneously. Once completed, passengers from Panchkula and surrounding areas will no longer need to travel to the ISBT in Sector 43 to catch inter-state buses.
Local bus services connecting to Raipur Rani, Shahzadpur, Naraingarh, Zirakpur, Dera Bassi, Lalru, Banur, and Rajpura will also be integrated into the proposed terminus. This will provide a new bus service option for commuters in Manimajra, Panchkula, and nearby areas.
Currently, Manimajra has only a small bus stand for local buses, primarily serving routes to and from Mansa Devi and Chandigarh; there are no bus services to Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, UP, or Uttarakhand. About 5,000 passengers use the existing stand daily. The presence of buses causes traffic congestion on nearby roads, and there are inadequate facilities for passenger seating, parking, and sanitation. Furthermore, the entry and exit points for buses are disorganized.
Sanjay Arora, Chief Engineer of the Municipal Corporation, stated that a proposal has been prepared to construct the integrated bus terminus on the six-acre site near Housing Board Chowk. The project is estimated to cost between ₹80 crore and ₹100 crore. Funds will be raised with 25 percent each coming from the Centre and the administration, and 50 percent from the corporation.
