Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated a grand Martyrs’ Memorial in Ambala Cantonment, built in memory of the First War of Independence of 1857. Addressing a large public gathering at Gandhi Ground, the Home Minister stated that it is because the martyrs sacrificed everything they had that we are able to witness the proud, independent India of today. He asserted firmly that a nation that fails to value its own freedom and does not record the sacrifices of its heroes in golden letters can never move forward.
Home Minister Amit Shah paid tribute to the valor of the heroes of the 1857 revolution, including Nana Saheb Peshwa, Maharani Lakshmibai, Tatya Tope, Azimullah Khan, Begum Hazrat Mahal, the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, and Babu Kunwar Singh who displayed indomitable courage at the age of 80.
