Racing Car Adventure To Boost Tourism In Chandigarh

Plans Underway To Introduce Go-Karting In Sector 17

The administration is taking a major step to boost tourism in the ‘City Beautiful’ by introducing a racing car adventure. In Sector 17 the city’s heart visitors will now be able to enjoy the thrill of racing cars alongside shopping, dining, and cultural events. A proposal to launch go-karting at this location is currently being prepared.

Tourism officials have already held a meeting regarding this initiative. A site near Tiranga Park has been identified for the project, which will be operated through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in collaboration with a private agency. The Estate Office has been requested to facilitate the transfer of the site.

Go-karting involves driving small, four-wheeled racing cars on a dedicated track. Both children and adults can enjoy these rides, subject to age-appropriate guidelines and established safety standards. Private companies already operate such facilities in several cities across the country, with costs ranging from ₹500 to ₹1,000 per ride.

There is significant potential to develop this as a commercial and tourism-oriented activity in Chandigarh. According to administration officials, they are also studying similar successful go-karting projects from other states that have proven effective in attracting tourists. Chandigarh currently welcomes 1.2 million (12 lakh) visitors annually.

Preparing To Transform Sector 17 Into A New Tourism Hub

Sector 17 Plaza serves as a primary commercial and public space in the city. It already features a musical fountain, an amphitheater, decorative lighting, and hosts various cultural events. The introduction of go-karting would add an exciting new adventure activity to the plaza.

This initiative is expected to attract not only the youth but also families and tourists visiting from other cities. The proposal will outline key details, including the space required for the track, the number of karts, safety protocols, the operating agency, and an assessment of projected costs. A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, in collaboration with a private agency, could also be an option. Under this arrangement, the administration would provide the land, while a private company would take responsibility for equipment and operations. Specific terms regarding fees and operational conditions will be finalized following formal approval.

Concert-Cum-Exhibition Center To Be Built In Sarangpur

To attract large-scale events to the city, there is a plan to develop a concert-cum-exhibition center on approximately 25 acres of land in Sarangpur. This facility will host major concerts, exhibitions, and public events, helping to bring large-scale events currently held in Mohali and Panchkula to Chandigarh.

Digital Museum At The Le Corbusier Centre

The Heritage Conservation Committee has approved a project to develop a digital museum at the Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19. The museum will use digital technology to provide tourists with information about Chandigarh’s architecture, history, and urban planning.

Focus On Sukhna Lake And Green Tourism

There is a plan to integrate Sukhna Lake and the city’s green spaces into tourism-related activities. The focus is on promoting boating, cycling, trekking, and eco-friendly tourism. Sukhna Lake is already one of the city’s primary tourist destinations.

Ongoing Transformations In Sector 17

Efforts to revitalize the Sector 17 Plaza have included the installation of fountains, an amphitheater, attractive lighting, projector mapping, and the hosting of cultural events. This Diwali, the area was decorated with approximately 20,000 digital lights featuring a ‘cherry blossom’ theme. Plans are now underway to introduce activities such as go-karting.

First Tourism Policy Formulated

The Chandigarh Administration has drafted the city’s first-ever tourism policy. Its objective is to link the city’s architecture, heritage, and tourist attractions with opportunities for employment, investment, and business growth. The policy emphasizes encouraging tourism-related businesses, attracting private investment, and simplifying processes.
