Neeru Bajwa Raises Questions Over Removal Of Film ‘Sutlej’

Actress Neeru Bajwa has joined the growing list of Punjabi artists who have expressed concern over the removal of film ‘Sutlej’ from streaming in India. Without naming any authority responsible for the decision, the actress said she is saddened that the film was removed before she had a chance to watch it.

Sharing her words on Instagram Stories, Neeru termed the move as unjustified and said that as an artist who takes pride in her Punjabi identity, the incident has disappointed her. She also stressed that films that reflect the history and identity of the community deserve a platform and should not be banned.

Neeru Wrote In Her Instagram Post:

“Before I could watch ‘Sutlej’, it was removed. I don’t understand! Why? Why was it removed. It really makes me feel how unfair things are.

As a proud Punjabi, I feel deeply disappointed and betrayed by the removal of ‘Sutlej’. Stories that reflect our culture and identity deserve to be seen, not silenced. This decision is unfair and heartbreaking for our community.”

Industry And Streaming Platform Stance

The actress’s comment comes at a time when the film’s removal has sparked a wide debate on social media and many members of the Punjabi entertainment world are questioning why the project was withdrawn.

Neeru’s message is being seen as a support to actor Diljit Dosanjh and the entire team of ‘Sutlej’, who are at the centre of controversy after the film was not available for audiences in India. Diljit had earlier hinted in his response that the situation was reminiscent of the struggles faced by the film’s main subject Jaswant Singh Khalra, whose work focused on highlighting human rights violations.

Streaming platform ZEE5, which premiered the film, announced that ‘Sutlej’ has been removed from its Indian catalogue until further notice. However, the platform clarified that it supports the film and its makers and is exploring all legal and procedural options to make it available again for audiences in the country.

‘Sutlej’, which released on July 3, is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. It stars Diljit Dosanjh in the lead role, while Kanwaljit Singh, Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Vicky also play important roles. The controversy over the film’s removal has sparked a wider debate on artistic expression and the representation of regional history in cinema.
