Debit cards have become an essential part of our daily lives. Whether withdrawing cash from an ATM, shopping online, or making payments via a POS machine at a store, they are used everywhere. If you happen to lose your debit card or it gets stolen, the priority should be to secure it rather than panic. Many people wait for a while, hoping to recover the card, but this delay can lead to financial loss. You should take immediate steps as soon as you realize the card is missing.
Don’t Wait To Find The Card
If you cannot find your debit card, do not wait for it to turn up. You can immediately inform the bank to have the card blocked or “hotlisted.” This helps prevent any future unauthorized transactions. If necessary, you can also request the bank to issue a new debit card.
Inform The Bank Immediately
Contact the bank’s phone banking service or customer care if your card is lost or stolen. The bank may ask for details regarding your identity and the card itself. After the necessary verification, the bank will block the card. If the card was stolen, you can also file an FIR at the nearest police station. Some banks may require a copy of the police complaint or FIR in such cases, so it is advisable to check with the bank beforehand regarding the required documents.
Block It Online Via Net Banking
If you have active internet banking, you can hotlist the card online. Log in to your net banking account via the bank’s official website. Navigate to the ‘Debit Card’ or ‘Card Services’ section, select the lost or stolen card, and choose the ‘Hotlist’ or ‘Block Card’ option.
Mobile Banking Is Also Useful
You can also block the card using the bank’s mobile app. If mobile banking is active on your phone, this is an easy way to secure the card immediately. Once the card is hotlisted, transactions such as ATM withdrawals or payments made using the card are stopped. However, continue to monitor your account’s transaction history even after this. If any transaction occurred before the card was lost or before you discovered it was missing that you did not authorize, inform the bank immediately.
