Relief from Traffic Congestion at Tribune Chowk: Flyover Construction to Begin in April

Engineering Department Gears Up

Regarding the much anticipated Tribune Chowk flyover project, the UT Engineering Department on Tuesday postponed the process of opening financial bids due to technical reasons. According to officials, the financial bids will now be opened on Thursday.

An official from the department stated that while the opening of bids has been delayed for the time being due to technical issues, the process will be completed shortly. Following a scrutiny by a high powered Joint Technical Committee, a total of eight companies have been deemed technically qualified for this project. The work will be entrusted to one of these agencies.

The contract for this project which has been pending for nearly seven years was scheduled to be awarded on Tuesday, but it has now faced a slight delay. According to the administration’s plan, construction work on the flyover is expected to commence by the end of April, with a target set for its completion within two years.

The construction of this flyover, spanning approximately 1.6 kilometers, is expected to provide relief from the severe traffic congestion frequently witnessed at Tribune Chowk. According to historical traffic data, nearly 143,000 vehicles pass through this intersection daily, including approximately 135,000 private cars.

Although the project received approval from the Central Government in July of last year, it took the administration nearly seven months to issue the tenders. A total of 12 companies participated in the tender process initiated in February of this year, out of which eight were shortlisted following a thorough evaluation. Now, the final contract for the project will be awarded to one specific company only after the financial bids of these eight qualified agencies have been opened.
