Chandigarh Grenade Attack Solved; Five Accused Arrested

Indications Of Foreign Conspiracy; Mastermind Absconding

The Punjab Police have achieved a major breakthrough, claiming to have solved the case of the grenade attack that took place in Chandigarh. In a joint operation conducted by the Counter-Intelligence Wing and the Chandigarh Police, five accused individuals have been arrested. A hand grenade, a .30 bore Zigana pistol, and live cartridges were recovered from their possession.

DGP Gaurav Yadav stated on Saturday that preliminary investigations have yielded concrete indications linking this entire module to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI. This network was operating at the behest of handlers based abroad, whose locations have been traced to Portugal and Germany.

The arrested accused have been identified as Balwinder Lal alias Shami (from Majri village, Nawanshahr), Jasvir Singh alias Jassi (from Bharapur village), Charanjit Singh alias Channi (from Sujawalpur village), Rubal Chauhan (from Thana village, Shimla), and Mandeep alias Abhijot Sharma (from Dhuri, Sangrur).

An Organized Network Established

According to the DGP, this was an organized network comprising sub-modules and cutouts operating at various levels. Their activities ranged from the supply and transport of weapons to the actual execution of the attack. He further revealed that the two main accused directly involved in the attack have also been identified, and raids are currently underway to apprehend them.

According to reports, a grenade attack was carried out on April 3 outside the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office located in Sector 37, Chandigarh, an incident that put security agencies on high alert. Following this attack, the investigation into the entire case was significantly expedited.

Deepak Parekh, AIG of the SSOC (State Special Operation Cell), Mohali, stated that the investigation has revealed that the arrested accused played a pivotal role in transporting a consignment of weapons and grenades from one location to another. This consignment passed through multiple hands before finally reaching the accused individuals who carried out the attack.

Conspiracy Hatched By Handler Based In Portugal

It was revealed that this entire conspiracy was executed under the instructions of a handler based in Portugal. The accused individuals not only coordinated the delivery but also played an active role in the execution of the attack. Currently, continuous raids are being conducted to apprehend the accused who remain at large.

In connection with this case, FIR No. 4, dated 03/04/2026, has been registered at the SSOC Police Station, Mohali. Legal proceedings in this case are being initiated under Section 25(1)(b) of the Arms Act and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The police state that a thorough investigation into the matter is underway, and all forward and backward linkages are being scrutinized to ensure the complete unearthing of the entire network.
