PU Administration Under Scrutiny; Demands For Exam Cancellation
Questions regarding the examination system at Panjab University have arisen after a photograph surfaced showing former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi inside the examination hall while taking his MA Public Administration exam.
Devesh Moudgil, former Mayor of Chandigarh and a former member of the Panjab University Senate and Syndicate, has demanded an investigation and equal application of rules by the university administration regarding this matter.
Moudgil has written to Panjab University Chancellor CP Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor Meenakshi Goyal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, demanding action in the case.
Channi Seen Taking Exam Inside The Hall In The Photo
He stated that in the photograph published on August 21, Channi is seen taking the exam inside the hall. Therefore, it must be clarified who took the picture and with what device.
He questioned how the device used to take the photo reached the examination hall when electronic devices such as mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, earphones, tablets, and laptops are prohibited at the center.
He demanded an immediate investigation into the matter. Moudgil also questioned under which rule and category Channi was granted a “special opportunity” instead of the scheduled exam. He demanded that information regarding the application for the special opportunity, the reason, the relevant category, and the approval from the competent authority be made public.
Demand To Preserve CCTV Footage Of The Exam
Meanwhile, Moudgil demanded that the CCTV footage of the August 20 exam be preserved, stating that it could clarify the situation regarding people entering the exam center and the presence of prohibited devices. Moudgil noted that if an ordinary student is found with a prohibited electronic device, action is taken under UMC (Unfair Means Case) regulations.
Therefore, the rules should apply equally in Channi’s case. He demanded that if a violation is proven during the investigation, a UMC case be registered, the exam be cancelled, and he be debarred from examinations for two years in accordance with the rules.
