BJP Leader Sunil Jakhar Outraged Over The Reinstatement Of A Drug Inspector In Punjab

Writes To Amit Shah, Demands An Investigation By The NIA And ED

Former Punjab BJP state president Sunil Jakhar has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding that the case involving Drug Inspector Sisam Kumar be investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Jakhar alleged that despite the discovery of assets worth crores of rupees in a case linked to drug trafficking in Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government reinstated the accused following his release on bail and appointed him to a key position at the department’s headquarters. He has requested an investigation into potential government patronage and money laundering aspects of the case.

In his letter to Amit Shah dated October 17, Jakhar also referenced an incident in Mansa where a young man was shot dead for opposing the sale of drugs. He noted that the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has already sought a response from the Chief Secretary of the Punjab government regarding this matter. Furthermore, Jakhar highlighted the gravity of the case involving Drug Inspector Sisam Kumar who was posted in Mansa and emphasized the need for an inquiry by central agencies.

Discovery Of Assets Worth Crores

In his letter, Jakhar stated that the Punjab Police arrested the Drug Inspector in 2024. During the investigation, authorities uncovered Rs 7.09 crore across 24 bank accounts, two bank lockers, Rs 21.49 crore in cash, 260 grams of gold, foreign currency, and immovable property valued at Rs 2.40 crore.

According to the letter, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Punjab had stated that the Drug Inspector was acting as the kingpin of a syndicate linked to drug traffickers imprisoned in jails, and was facilitating the sale of narcotics. Jakhar has linked this case to drug trafficking networks operated from within prisons, connections to cross-border drug smuggling, and the accumulation of assets worth crores of rupees. He stated that the discovery of assets on such a large scale warranted an investigation into money laundering. Despite this, the Punjab government neither requested an inquiry by the NIA nor referred the matter to the ED.

At Whose Behest Was This Significant Responsibility Assigned?

In his letter, Jakhar questioned the basis for the decision to reinstate a drug inspector who had been arrested in a drug-related case into service following his release on bail, and to subsequently appoint him to a key position at the department’s headquarters. He further urged the Home Minister to ascertain at whose direction this individual, arrested in connection with a drug case, was assigned such an important role.

Jakhar asserted that an investigation by the NIA and the ED is essential to identify the individuals behind this racket. Furthermore, he called for the exposure of the alleged official patronage enabling drug operations to be run from within prisons, as well as the associated money laundering activities.

He noted in the letter that the Punjab government itself acknowledges drug abuse as a major problem in the state. On behalf of those affected by the drug crisis in Punjab, Jakhar has requested the Union Home Minister to intervene in the matter and initiate an investigation by central agencies.
