A bullet train will operate from New Delhi to Varanasi. It will reach Agra from New Delhi in one hour, and Varanasi in 3 hours and 30 minutes. On Saturday, in Varanasi, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the Prime Minister has approved the northern corridor of the Delhi-Varanasi-Guwahati bullet train project. This corridor will originate in Delhi and connect Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, and Ayodhya. From there, it will proceed via Varanasi, Patna, and Siliguri to reach Guwahati.
The distance from Varanasi to Delhi is approximately 807 kilometers. Trains like the Tejas and Rajdhani take over 10 hours to cover this distance, whereas the bullet train will be able to complete the journey in just 3.30 hours. According to railway sources, the schedules for the bullet trains from Siliguri to Varanasi and from Varanasi to Delhi will be coordinated so that passengers can easily transfer from one train to the other.
Air travel from Varanasi to Delhi takes 1 hour and 40 minutes; however, when accounting for the time spent traveling to the airport, boarding the aircraft, and departing after landing, the total journey time comes to approximately four hours. India’s first bullet train will operate between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. A bullet train with a higher seating capacity will run between Varanasi and Siliguri.
Currently, the plan is to operate a bullet train with 731 seats between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, while the bullet train running from Varanasi to Siliguri via Patna will be able to accommodate 750 passengers. For the first time, an earthquake warning system is being installed on a bullet train; this system is based on Japanese technology. In the event of an earthquake, this system will immediately cut off the power supply. As soon as the power is cut, the emergency brakes will be applied, and the train will come to a stop.
