Has Factionalism In Punjab Congress Been Put To Rest?
Channi, Warring, And Bajwa Seen In The Same Frame

Ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, the Congress party attempted to send a message of unity in Chandigarh. Almost all key party leaders shared the stage at the ceremony marking the assumption of office by the new state Congress chief, Pargat Singh.
Senior leaders including former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, former state president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, and MPs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Partap Singh Bajwa, and Bharat Bhushan Ashu were present. During the nearly two-hour-long event, leaders, including state in-charge Sachin Pilot, shared their views and pledged to fight the assembly elections unitedly.
Amidst ongoing internal discussions regarding the change of the state president and factionalism, this was the first major occasion where almost all prominent leaders appeared on a single platform.
From the stage, leaders spoke of moving forward together and preparing the organization for the elections. However, their speeches also clearly conveyed messages regarding their respective tenures and contributions to the organization.
Pilot Says: Hard Work Of The Last Four Years Will Not Go To Waste
Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot stated that the coming four months are not merely a time to prepare for a return to power, but an opportunity to work towards bringing change in Punjab.
He affirmed that the contributions of leaders and workers who toiled over the past four years would not be overlooked. These leaders had worked hard even during the period when the party was facing difficult political circumstances.
Pilot emphasized the need to take all leaders along and move forward with collective leadership. He stressed that all party leaders should fulfill their responsibilities and gear up for the election preparations.
Raja Warring Speaks Against Overlooking Past Tenures
Former state president Raja Warring stated that the contributions of leaders and workers who have worked for the party over the last four and a half years should not be ignored. This message of his is being viewed in the context of the roles played by the old leadership and their supporters amidst the changes in the state Congress leadership.
Meanwhile, the new chief, Pargat Singh, stated that all leaders would struggle together. Describing his team as strong, he emphasized collective effort, asserting that the interests of Punjab and the people of Punjab must remain the party’s priority.
Bajwa: Everyone Must Move Forward Together
Senior leader Partap Singh Bajwa also highlighted the need for all leaders to move forward together. Alluding to past differences and previous events involving the leaders, he remarked that change is inevitable over time; therefore, one should leave the past behind and move forward in the interest of the organization.
Targeting The Mann Government
Leaders at the event also took aim at the Aam Aadmi Party government. Pargat Singh alleged that Delhi controls the decisions of the Punjab government. He claimed that even social media messages issued by ministers and MLAs require approval from Delhi. The new state Congress chief leveled these allegations while questioning the government’s functioning.
Overall, through Pargat Singh’s assumption-of-office ceremony, the Congress attempted to demonstrate organizational unity by bringing its senior leaders onto a single platform. The challenge now lies in sustaining this unity at the grassroots level and translating it into preparation for the assembly elections.
