HS Phoolka a Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court, human rights activist, and child rights advocate who has long championed the fight to secure justice for the victims of the 1984 Sikh Massacre joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday.
Union Minister Hardeep Puri formally inducted him into the party at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, presenting him with a membership slip and draping a traditional patka (sash) over his shoulders. Present on the occasion were National General Secretary Tarun Chugh, Punjab BJP State President Sunil Jakhar, Punjab BJP Working President Ashwani Sharma, Delhi BJP State President Virendra Sachdeva, and Delhi Government Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, among others.
A Former Member Of The Aam Aadmi Party
This marks Phoolka’s second foray into the political arena. In 2017, he won the Dakha Assembly seat on an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ticket. The party subsequently appointed him as the Leader of the Opposition. However, he soon became disillusioned with politics and resigned from his post as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
Following Phoolka’s induction into the BJP, Tarun Chugh remarked that Phoolka has waged a relentless struggle to ensure the conviction of those guilty of the 1984 Sikh Massacre. He noted that Phoolka played a pivotal role in securing convictions for over 250 perpetrators across more than 70 separate cases. Hardeep Puri added that Phoolka has dedicated himself to a noble cause, fighting numerous battles to secure justice for the victims without any personal ulterior motives.
Sunil Jakhar stated that Advocate HS Phoolka a universally respected figure within the Sikh community who has consistently and fearlessly fought for justice on behalf of the *Kaum* (community) joining the BJP serves as proof that the web of lies and misconceptions spun by the opposition against the BJP is now crumbling in the face of truth.
He further asserted that it is precisely because of the sincere and earnest efforts undertaken by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Central Government for the advancement of the Sikh community that leaders of such high moral character as Phoolka are today choosing to align themselves with the BJP. Expressing his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP National President Nitin Navin, Phoolka shared some old memories. He recounted that November 2, 1984, was the most terrifying day of his life a day when his home was attacked, and his wife, who was pregnant at the time, was running frantically from place to place in an effort to save him.
“I lived on the first floor, and the mob had surged up the stairs. My landlord belonged to a Punjabi Hindu family and was a staunch supporter of the BJP. He stepped forward to help me. It was his wife and daughter-in-law who saved my life. My only crime was that I was a Sikh. Those three days in 1984 constituted a premeditated massacre of Sikhs orchestrated by the Congress party an event that was later cynically portrayed as a conflict between Hindus and Sikhs, whereas, in reality, it was a conflict between the Congress and the Sikhs.”
