Special Session Of Punjab Assembly On Labour Day; Decision Taken In Cabinet Meeting

Preparations Underway For Censure Motion Against BJP

On the occasion of Labour Day on May 1st, the Punjab government has decided to convene a special session of the Legislative Assembly. This decision was taken during a cabinet meeting, which also gave its approval to introduce a resolution in the House to pay tribute to the martyrs of May Day.

However, political circles suggest that this session is likely to be far more than a mere formality, signaling a significant rise in political tensions. According to sources, representatives from various labor organizations may also be invited to attend this special session.

Discussion On Labor-Related Issues Expected

A detailed discussion is expected regarding the impact of MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and the structural changes associated with it on the working class. Furthermore, the challenges currently facing workers amidst prevailing national and international circumstances have also been included in the agenda. The most significant and widely discussed aspect of this session, however, is expected to be political in nature.

Recent developments specifically the defection of seven Rajya Sabha members belonging to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the BJP have heated up the political atmosphere in the state. Consequently, it is anticipated that a heated debate against the BJP could ensue within the Assembly, and a censure motion against the party may also be introduced.

This is not the first instance where a special session has been convened to address such issues. Previously, in September 2022, the Punjab government had attempted to convene a special session in connection with ‘Operation Lotus.’

Vote Of Confidence Passed On September 27

At that time, a confrontation had also emerged between the Governor and the government. Subsequently, on September 27, the session was held, and the government successfully passed its vote of confidence. During that period, the Aam Aadmi Party had alleged that the BJP was attempting to destabilize their government by luring away their MLAs. A case regarding this matter was also registered in Mohali.

Now, following the recent developments involving the Rajya Sabha members, the Aam Aadmi Party has once again launched an offensive against the BJP. Given this context, it is widely believed that during this special session convened under the pretext of Labour Day the exchange of political allegations and counter-allegations will intensify, and the ruling party will make every effort to corner the BJP.
