‘We Will Legalize Opium Cultivation…’ Navjot Kaur Promise to Farmers
BRP To Contest Elections on All Seats In Punjab

Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, signaled a new political direction during a conference in Chandigarh. She clearly stated that her party the Bharatiya Rashtravadi Party (BRP)will field candidates on all 117 assembly seats in Punjab. The party’s electoral focus will center on boosting farmers’ incomes, with the legalization of opium cultivation proposed as the most significant step in this direction.
Dr. Sidhu noted that, currently, opium is utilized extensively in the pharmaceutical industry; however, its supply is being facilitated through illicit channels. Given that this crop is essential for medicinal purposes, she questioned, “Why shouldn’t our own farmers be the ones to cultivate it?” She added, “At present, people clandestinely procure opium from outside sources; we aim to bring this practice under a regulated and legal framework to ensure that the benefits accrue to the farmers.”
She further revealed that her team is currently engaging in discussions with farmers and experts abroad regarding this specific model. “We are in talks with farmers from Australia, Germany, and the UK who are willing to visit Punjab to share their modern techniques and expertise,” she stated. Additionally, the party has reached out to various non governmental organizations (NGOs) that will assist economically disadvantaged candidates in contesting the elections.
‘Breaking Free From The Traditional Wheat-Paddy Cycle Is Essential’
Dr. Sidhu also clarified that, within her party, the allocation of responsibilities will be strictly based on merit. “Individuals will be assigned departments corresponding to their areas of expertise. Medical experts will be entrusted with the Health portfolio, while education specialists will be given charge of the Education sector. Addressing issues concerning farmers, she stated that it is imperative to break away from the traditional cycle of wheat and paddy cultivation.
We will encourage farmers to shift toward healthy and alternative crops, thereby enabling them to boost their income.” Speaking on the subject of election funding, she took aim at major political parties, declaring that she would steer clear of the practice of accepting money in exchange for election tickets. “Why should I pay? I will instead invest these funds in public welfare projects,” asserted Navjot Kaur.
Dr. Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s announcement has sparked a fresh debate within Punjab’s political landscape particularly regarding the proposal to legalize opium cultivation a topic around which political and social discourse is expected to intensify in the near future. Concurrently, the party is also set to launch a membership drive.
