Google has announced new quality standards for Android apps. These standards aim to reduce excessive RAM usage by apps and improve phone performance. The company says that controlling device memory usage is necessary given the increasing pressure on memory chip availability. Under the new rules, apps that exceed established memory and performance limits will be prosecuted. These rules will come into effect in February 2027, and apps that do not comply may face limitations on visibility and publishing features on Google Play.
Google said that hardware supply pressure is increasing in the mobile industry, which may affect the availability of device memory in the future. Keeping this in mind, new memory usage standards are being set for Android apps so that excessive RAM usage by a single app does not slow down the entire system. Google Play will now monitor app performance based on code optimization, bitmap memory, and dynamic memory usage.
Under the new rules, apps available on Google Play will be required to achieve at least 25% coverage in optimization, compression, and throttling using tools like R8. According to the company, apps that exceed resource usage limits may experience performance impacts, and in some cases, even crashes.
To prepare developers for these changes, new diagnostic tools will be made available in the Play Console. These include features such as high memory information in Android Vitals, a filter for out-of-memory crashes, information about DEX code optimization, and warnings when thresholds are crossed.
These new rules will go into effect in February 2027. Apps and games that don’t meet the requirements may face reduced visibility on Google Play and may also have an impact on publishing features. Google said that additional information regarding these rules will be released later this year.
In addition, Google has introduced the zero-tap sign-in standard. Under this, apps that provide sign-in will have to automatically restore the user’s signed-in state after switching to a new Android device.
