The possibility of a split within the Punjab Congress has increased ahead of the 2027 assembly elections. The Navjot Sidhu faction has also entered the fray between former Chief Minister Charanjit Channi and state president Raja Warring. Former DGP Mohammad Mustafa, who is close to Sidhu and husband of former minister Razia Sultana, has demanded Raja Warring’s resignation. He also questioned the high command about Channi’s meeting, claiming that it was due to the delay in coming out of the results. He said that the post of president should be considered on the basis of his ability and competence to run the party’s organization.
He advocated the appointment of a strong leader. However, Navjot Sidhu has not yet formally commented on the matter. After the show of strength of former Chief Minister Charanjit Channi, President Raja Warring has also started playing the power game. Instead of Channi gathering crowds, Raja Warring is going door to door meeting leaders. He is gathering support by meeting them behind closed doors. Raja Warring is trying to ensure that, while Channi claims to have the support of over 50 leaders, he can also present his figures to the high command. Channi is unhappy that Warring has been retained as the Chief Minister.
